Nerja Caves will be the first to install Fibre optic network

The caves will soon implement a system which allows the use of localisation sensor-activated intelligent audio guides and which will improve the visitor experience with multimedia. The improvements will be carefully installed in phases to cause the least possible disruptions on the cave and to visitors.

The upgrade will include the placement of location sensors that determine the exact location of visitors, as well as presentations on multimedia devices displaying photographs, videos and audios of a quality that otherwise could not be shown, given the special conservation needs of this natural area and difficulty of access.

The special equipment has been adapted to withstand the conditions within the cave, considering the high moisture concentration present during any season.
The new service will even benefit the hearing impaired when audio may not be an option. People with hearing problems will have the option to read information on multimedia screens where text size can even be enlarged.

As part of the infrastructure developed within the caves, the fibre optic system will allow the inclusion of Wi-Fi adapted to this environment and even broadcast live video and manage large amounts of data.

Similarly, the In-Location system enables the integration of different existing environment sensors in the cave, collating the readings in a single central computer for further analysis and that can be shown through the Nerja Cave website.
It is also hoped that this new technology will allow tours more frequently as numbers can be managed more effectively.
