Nerja’s recycling awareness is gaining momentum

Nerja is now even closer to meeting the challenge launched by Nerja Town hall and Ecoembes, the organization that takes care of the environment and promotes sustainability across packaging & recycling. The target is to increase by 10 % of the amount of packaging recycled from the previous year, which in case of Nerja was an 18,8 kilos average per inhabitant / year and the award, after winning the challenge, consists of a generous economic donation.

This environmental campaign has challenged the inhabitants of Nerja to increase their own quantity of packaging deposited in the special yellow containers within three months in order to obtain a donation for APA Nerja, Estación Esperanza. After this final month of the campaign, it will be possible to assess if Nerja fulfils the challenge set.

The campaign emphasises the importance of recycling all packaging that must go in designated yellow containers (plastic packaging, cans etc) and in the blue containers (paper and cardboard), to become leading municipality that recycles the most items. There is a web page by Reciclaplus that is full of information on the challenge and to help clarify what should be recycled: www.somosreciclaplus.com

The Reciclaplus mobile unit proved a success when it was temporarily set up for four days last September in the Verano Azul area, helping promote environmental awareness then too. Information centres were also established in educational centres such as Virgen del Mar, Narixa, San Miguel and Nueva Nerja and the Cultural Centre of Nerja. Also many useful suggestions were submitted from Nerja residents and will be used to improve the service of collection of waste in the locality.
