Caminito del Rey seeks UNESCO World Heritage status

Andalucía’s Caminito del Rey walkway has gotten one step closer to becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site after provincial government leaders approved launching a bid to gain UNESCO status.

The provincial council has agreed to put together a working committee with the help of local town halls before sending a proposal to Madrid.

The provincial council has also proposed creating a number of campaigns both within Spain and abroad to raise awareness of the Caminito del Rey walkway.

Provincial council president Elías Bendodo highlighted the importance of the project and the fact it would not only protect the unique walkway for years to come, but also the economic impact it would have on the surrounding area.

The Caminito del Rey is only an hour and a half drive from Nerja and is an experience you will find nowhere else in Europe.

A word of warning though if you are afraid of heights the path above the Guadalhorce River can be quite daunting, but an experience you will remember for the rest of your life.
