Adra, Almeria Province

The resort town of Adra, originally called Abdera, is the western-most coastal town in the province of Almeria and is about 108 km from Nerja. Founded in the 8th century B.C. by the Phoenicians, it became an important port during the Roman occupation.

During the Al Andalus period, the economy of the town became based on agriculture, silk and, of course, the sea trade. The Catholic reconquest was, for once, a peaceful one. At the beginning of the 16th century the town was rebuilt and renamed Adra la Nueva.

From the 17th century, the cultivation and commercialization of sugar cane began and the town grew in size, attracting many migrant workers.

The 19th century saw the economy of the town become based on lead from the Sierra de Gador, the first smelting ovens being built in 1822. For twenty years the exploitation of the Sierra de Gador seam dominated the lead market. However, a combination of falling prices and the exhaustion of the seam saw the economy revert to sugar cane.

These days, greenhouse farming is the mainstay of the local economy. Adra has numerous magnificent, sandy beaches and is also a working fishing harbour. Get there early and you can watch the daily dawn fish auctions. Naturally, the town has many good seafood restaurants.
