Alfarnatejo is a small village about five minutes from Alfarnate and, until the 18th century when it was granted independent village status, was dependent on its neighbour.
The two villages were known as Los Alfarnates, a name of Arabic
origin as one might expect and meaning 'flour mills'. In common
with many places in this part of the Axarquia, prehistoric
remains bear witness to a human presence going back millenia.
The Peña Hora caves date back to the Paleolithic period.
