Alfarnatejo, Málaga Province

Alfarnatejo is a small village about five minutes from Alfarnate and, until the 18th century when it was granted independent village status, was dependent on its neighbour.

The two villages were known as Los Alfarnates, a name of Arabic origin as one might expect and meaning 'flour mills'. In common with many places in this part of the Axarquia, prehistoric remains bear witness to a human presence going back millenia. The Peña Hora caves date back to the Paleolithic period.

Local specialities include: Olla con Garbanzos (chick pea stew), Ensalada con Hierbabuena y Ajos (mint and garlic salad), Morrete de Setas (mushroom dish), Sopas Cachorreñas (soup made with cod, dried red peppers, croutons, baked garlic and vinegar), Choto al Ajillo (kid in garlic), Oil cakes and Hornazos de San Marcos (sweet buns filled with hard boiled egg).

Local Fiestas

Fiesta de la Candelaria (February) - Candlemas celebration with bonfires and a procession.

Semana Santa - Easter Saturday is traditionally celebrated with the chime of church bells giving the signal for young men to roam the streets ringing cowbells.

Festividad de San Marcos (April 25th) - A day spent in the country eating the traditional hornazos (sweet buns filled with hard boiled egg).

Romería de San Isidro Labrador (May 15th)

Fiestas del Cristo de Cabrilla (September 29th) - Fiesta in honour of the village's patron.
