Seven
kilometres north of Nerja, perched high on a mountain ridge, is the
picturesque town of Frigiliana, undoubtedly one of the best of the
typical Andalucían 'White Villages'.
The hill overlooking the village, El uerte, was the scene of the final battle, and defeat, of the Axarquia Moors in their rebellion of 1569. On top of the hill are a few remains of the old fort from which it is said that many Moors threw themselves from it rather than be captured by the Christians.
The village is a maze of narrow, cobbled streets lined with white-washed houses and best explored on foot. Do be warned though, most of the streets are steep and some of them are very steep. Small, dark alleys often lead to a bar or restaurant!
On the subject of food and drink, no shortage of watering holes and you'll find some excellent restaurants all over the town.
A series of 12 plaques throughout the village chronicle the 'Battalla de Peñon'.
Small plazas provide shade and the village bars serve the locally produced wine. There are also several excellent shops selling pottery and ceramics, including decorative plates with their distinctive Arab design.
There is adequate parking at the bottom of the hill if you are driving to Frigiliana. There are several buses a day that run from Nerja, although there is generally no service on Sundays or public holidays and fiesta days. (see below for timetables)
