Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz Province - Sherry, Flamenco and Horses

Jerez (de la Frontera), in the province of Cádiz, is world famous for its sweet wines, fine horses and flamenco singers and dancers. The "de la Frontera" was added because it once stood on the frontier between the Moorish and the Christian realms.

The Jerez wines, named after the town (the British pronouncing it as "sherry") are very distinctive, made so by the strong sun which gives the grapes a high sugar content. They have been exported for centuries.

Sandeman, John Harvey, Pedro Domecq and Gonzalez Byass are amongst the famous names to be seen above bodegas in the town. There are guided tours of many of the cellars with, of course, plenty of opportunity for sampling the produce!

Jerez is also world famous for its magnificent dancing horses and every Thursday morning there is a spectacular dressage display at the Real Escuela Andaluza de Arte Equestre ( the Royal Andalucian School of Equestrian Art), At other times it is possible to watch the horses being trained.

Jerez can be reached by car, bus, train and by air, it has its own airport.
Aeropuerto de la Parra, 7 km north of the town on the road to Seville. Tel: 0034 956 150000.

The Plaza de San Juan is the site of the 18th century Palacio de Penmartín, home to the Centro Andaluz de Flamenco. Various exhibitions give a good introduction to the flamenco music and dance tradition. Open Monday to Friday.

Not far from Jerez is El Puerto de Santa Maria, home to the Osborne and Terry bodegas. It is from here that vast quantities of sherry are exported. The town has a 13th century castle and boasts one of the largest bullrings in Spain.
