Sedella, Málaga Province

Sedella is a small village between Archez and Canillas de Aceituno and is one of the thirty-one towns forming part of what is known as the 'Ruta Mudéjar'. It is a typically Moorish town with narrow, windy and often steep streets, and the Mudéjar architectural style is much in evidence.

Many of the older buildings have been replaced by newer ones, although in most cases the old Mudéjar design has been carefully preserved.

The town is nearly seven hundred metres above sea level, which means you get great views of the area and the Sierra Tejeda and Bentomiz. On a clear day, and if you are very lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of the Atlas Mountains across the Mediterranean.

There is evidence of pre-historic, Roman and Carthaginian settlements in the area but very little is known about this period of the town's history. Probably just minor settlements, nothing really noteworthy. The name itself is probably from the Latin 'Sedilia', roughly meaning 'rural settlement', although it has undergone several changes.

It appears as 'Sedille' on a map ordered by the Visigoth King Wamba and as 'Sedilla' in an Episcopal address by the Bishop of Málaga, Teodulpo. It then became Xedalia and then, according to local urban legend, it was Queen Isabel herself who, when informed of a particularly fierce battle between the Moors and Christians in the area known as Arroyo de la Matanza, allegedly replied 'Sé de ella' (I know about it).
