Yunquera, once a small Roman settlement called Juncaria (meadow of Reeds), was part of the kingdom of one Omar Ben Hafsun during Moorish times. Omar Ben Hafsun, variously regarded as rebel or bandit, ruled a large part of Andalucía during his dispute with the Caliphate of Córdoba and Yunquera was only recaptured in 928 after the defeat of Omar's sons.
In 1485 it was captured by Diego de Barrassa on behalf of
the Catholic Monarchs during the reconquest of Spain.
