Registration of a Death

There is no obligation for the death of a British national overseas to be registered with the British Consulate-General. However, there are the advantages that a British form of the death certificate is then available and that a record of the death is then held at the General Register Office in the UK.

Complete the application form for the registration of a death and send it to the British Consulate General with the appropriate registration fees, the deceased's local death certificate, the deceased's passport and full British birth certificate as proof of citizenship. In addition to every original document you send, you should also include a photocopy of each document.

If you have already returned to the UK and have decided to register a death that occurred in Spain, then you need to apply to the following address:

BIRTH AND DEATH REGISTRATION FEES
All applications should be accompanied by the registration fee, plus the fee for the number of copies you require, if any. The birth/death registration fee is 132 Euros and the fee for each certified copy is 84 Euros.

If applying in person at our office in Madrid, the preferred form of payment is by credit card. Accepted are MASTERCARD, VISA and VISA ELECTRON. Payment cannot be accept by bank draft, cheque or giro, nor in pounds sterling.

If applying by post. You can pay using Mastercard and Visa credit and debit cards by printing a Card Payment Authorisation Form, filling in your card details as instructed on the form, and enclosing this with your application by post. Please specify here whether you also require a copy of the birth certificate. DO NOT send your actual credit card. Please ensure you have sufficient funds available to pay using your debit or credit card or your application will be returned.
