El Cristo del Paño
This pilgrimage is to the shrine of El Cristo del Paño, in the town of
Moclin, not far from Montefrio in northern Granada Province.
This painting of Christ bearing the cross is believed to heal the aged of
cataracts – el paño, (the cloth), is the popular name for this condition
which ‘veils’ a persons sight. Touching the painting is also supposed to
make childless women fertile, and this miracle is referred to in Lorca´s
tragic play ‘Barren’.
