UK Passports – Renewals, First Passport and Change of Name
Consular offices throughout Spain can issue an emergency passport which is valid for a single journey to the United Kingdom.
The British Consulate-General in Madrid also issues full 10 year passports. Applications should be made on the relevant C1 form foradults, or C2 form forunder-16s.
(You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader for these pdf files)
You should enclose two passport size photographs, taken with a white background, one of which must be countersigned, and the fee. If your application is for a passport renewal, you should also include your old passport.
Routine passport applications are generally processed within ten days of receipt of a fully completed application and the correct fee. However, delays can occur during busy periods.
Read the notes and complete the application form carefully as incomplete forms may well be returned. Include a daytime phone number where you are most likely to be contactable..

*Amending an existing passport refers to applying for a new passport through a change of name, for example, where we would issue a new passport with a new photo and the amended information but within the same validity as the previous passport.
You should pay for the passport by cash (in person, not by post) or by
VISA or MASTERCARD. As from July 1st 2006, no other forms of payments (cheque, bankers draft, giro etc) are being accepted.
Please state exactly what you are applying for. (A family of two adults and two children would therefore write 2 x C1 + 2 x C2 + post= X euros.)
Cash is not accepted unless your application is made in person and any cash received through the post will be returned to the sender, delaying the application.
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED
In addition to the application form, photographs and fee, various documents are required depending upon the type of application. Attach originals of all documents requested.
Documents in Spanish are acceptable. Stamped copies ‘certificado literal del Registro Civil’ for Spanish marriage, birth or death certificates. The ‘libro de familia’ or ecclesiastical versions of marriage certificates are not acceptable. UK birth certificates must be the long versions, which show parents’ details.
All documents submitted in support of your application, including your old passport, duly cancelled, will be returned to you.
Passport Renewals
If you already hold a British passport, and wish to renew it, you should complete the C1 application form. You should send this along with your old passport, two photographs (one must be countersigned), and the fee, to the British Consulate-General in Madrid. The old passport will be cancelled and returned to you with the replacement.
In this case, your birth certificate or any other means of identification is not generally necessary, as long as there have been no changes, such as change of surname through marriage.
Applying for a first passport
If you were born before 1.1.83 in the UK, you must send your full UK birth certificate. You should have your application form countersigned by someone of professional standing, who has known you for at least two years.
If you were previously included on a parent’s passport, you should provide the passport or the issue details. It is not necessary to provide your parents’ birth certificates.
If you were born before 1.1.83 outside the UK you should include your original consular birth certificate, your original registration or naturalisation certificate with the Home Office, or your original birth certificate with your father’s full UK birth certificate and marriage certificate.
You must have your form countersigned by someone of professional standing who has known you for at least two years. If you were previously included on a parent’s passport, you should provide the passport or the issue details.
If you were born after 1.1.83 in the UK, you should include your full UK birth certificate and the full birth certificate of your mother or father. If you only send your father’s birth certificate, you must also include the marriage certificate of your parents. If you were previously included in a parent’s passport, you should send that as well.
If you were born after 1.1.83 outside the UK, and are applying for your first British passport, you should include your full foreign birth certificate and either your mother’s full UK birth certificate or your father’s full UK birth certificate and the marriage certificate.
Spanish birth certificates and marriage certificates are acceptable (but not the Libro de Familiar). Check first if the documents were issued in a third country. If you were previously included in a parent’s passport, you should send that along with your applications.
Applying for a first passport for under-16s
The application (form C2) must be completed by a parent. Children can not be added to an adult’s passport.
Amendments/ name changes for married women or others
If you are married, and wish to change to you husband’s surname, you must send your marriage certificate, and your old passport which will be cancelled and returned to you with your new passport.
If you are a married/divorced woman and wish to revert to your maiden name, you must send your marriage certificate and make a declaration on the form that you wish to revert to your maiden name for all intents and purposes, and your old passport. This will be cancelled and returned to you with your new passport.
If you have changed your name by deed poll, you must send the original deed, and your old passport which will be cancelled and returned to you along with your new passport.
Full UK Birth Certificate
The full version of the UK birth certificate is the only version that is acceptable for nationality purposes, and shows the parent’s details and the father’s profession.
If you have never had a full birth certificate or have lost it, you can obtain a new copy from the General Registry in Southport by letter, or by phone/fax/email, quoting debit/credit card details.
