There is quite a large variety of magazines, newspapers, guides  and other publications available free of charge, particularly along the coastal areas.

Not all are available in any one given area, and some are, in fact, often quite problematic to get hold of, but the majority can be found without too much difficulty.

The Market Place – monthly

The first of the ‘free’ magazines on the Costa del Sol with articles of interest, regular features, competitions and a supplement containing useful information. Publishes a sister edition (der Marktplatz) in German.

Soltalk – monthly

Formerly Nerja Essential, it contains a comprehensive news round-up, items of topical interest and regular features with a local flavour. Widely available.

Streetwise – monthly

Streetwise is slightly larger than the rest of the magazines, more coffee table size, and features extensive news coverage of the whole of Spain as well as having it’s regular health, food, sports and gardens sections.

Widely available along the Málaga coast and the Costa Tropical.

Ocio – monthly

Glossy monthly dual language magazine covering the Axarquia region. Fashion, dining and general lifestyle.

Broadsheet – monthly

The Broadsheet is a glossy Madrid-based magazine whose content is more general and covers the whole of Spain.

Not always readily available along the coast, seems to appear in fits and starts.

Sentinella – monthly

One of the first, if not the first of the pocket-sized A5 format magazines which suddenly began springing up all over the place. Began life as The Sentinel. Packed full of articles and information and has plenty of humour.

The Grapevine – monthly

Another of the A5 pocket mags which began life as the Competa Magazine but has gradually been spreading its wings to cover the whole of the Axarquia.

Not always the easiest magazine to get hold of.

Local Connections – monthly

Local Connections is an Antequera-based A5 pocket mag but now covering a wide area, including most of the coastal region.

Always has very good special features and an interesting ‘Out and About’ section.

The Gazette – monthly

The Gazette has been around a long time in various shapes, sizes and guises. It started more as a sort of gossip column but now, especially since being taken over by Streetwise, is a more ‘normal’, mainstream publication.

Spanish Insight – monthly

Monthly magazine, predominantly advertising including a property section, fairly widely available.

Svenska Magasinet – monthly

Monthly Swedish language magazine with articles and reports about Spain, excursions, news, profiles, lifestyle, sports, culture and properties. Widely available on the Costa del Sol with 8 – 10,000 copies produced every month except August.

Kosta – monthly

Kosta is a monthly Dutch language magazine containing news, articles and reports.

Sur in English – weekly

Sur in English is a weekly newspaper, in English, from the publishers of SUR, one of the main Spanish newspapers in southern Spain.

As you would expect from a newspaper, it has everything from news to sport to features to TV listings. An excellent newspaper and available everywhere.

Euro Weekly News – weekly

Formerly The Entertainer, it has very good coverage of both Spanish and other European news.

Widely available.

The Town Crier – weekly

A small weekly newspaper but not always widely available, distribution seems to be a little erratic.

A small, local newspaper with news now both in Spanish and English.

Widely available – on almost every street corner – in Nerja. Good coverage of local news and events.

This is a Granada-based newspaper, in English, covering mainly, but not exclusively, western Andalucía. Widely available and well worth a read.

Costa Tropical News

Interesting little A5 pocket magazine for the Costa Tropical area, readily available in La Herradura, Almuñecar and surrounding area. It is a monthly publication and is in English.

Diario La Axarquia
