Since September 2008, the Junta de Andalucía is no longer responsible for treating, cutting and collecting palm trees that have been infected by the nasty little Red Palm Weevil.

If a palm tree is infected, the owner is now responsible for cutting and transporting it to the Cantera Valverde at El Río de la Miel.

As a preventative measure, it is recommended that palms are sprayed and watered with 15 to 20 litres of ‘Durban 48′ every three months to prevent possible infections. However, this product should be applied by a qualified person.

In Nerja, the following company is duly accredited for such work:

Adetex
Calle Río Chillar
Edificio La Rambla II bajo
Tel: 95 252 2344.

The company also use a new treatment that involves injecting the palm tree, with 3 such applications costing around €60 each. Communities can request quotes.

All costs for such treatments are the responsibility of the owner of the palm tree.
