Villarreal maintained third place in La Liga, despite only drawing 0-0 with Osasuna. Racing Santander moved back up into UEFA Cup contention after a late win, 1-0, against Valladolid.
The Blue and Whites could only manage a 1-1 draw with bottom of the division Poli El Ejido, but they nevertheless reduced the gap at the top to four points as leaders Numancia went down 1-0 to Sporting. Baha scored for Málaga C.F. after Juli had put the home side ahead.
In tennis, world number 28 Nicolas Almagro stunned top seed David Nalbandian to win the Mexico Open in Acapulco. It was Almagro’s third ATP title and he won it 6-1, 7-6 and served 12 aces in the process.
Local lads C.D. Nerja made the trip down to Torre del Mar in the Primera Andaluza Grupo 3 and came away with a point in a 1-1 draw. Nerja are currently 10th in the league. Leaders C.D. Ronda were beaten 2-0 by Baeza C.F. which gave Estepona the chance to close the gap at the top, which they did, running out 4-0 winners against Manilva.
