Not a smooth start to new fishing agreement

Despite a new fishing agreement between the EU and Morocco finally being in place, for which Morocco receives €40 million, many Cádiz fishermen have once more had to return to port without being able to carry out their task.

The Cádiz fishermen claim that their gear was being cut by their Moroccan counterparts who were allegedly displaying a very hostile attitude to the Spanish fishermen. Several are apparently considering handing back their licences due to what they consider is ‘piracy’ by the Moroccan fishermen.

The Moroccan authorities have since promised to send an official vessel to the fishing grounds to try and mediate in any disputes and to ensure that the new agreement between the two countries can proceed as intended.
