Case against Esperanza Aguirre dropped

A judge has dropped a traffic case against former Madrid regional premier Esperanza Aguirre, ruling there wasn’t enough evidence to prove that she disobeyed a police officer following a hit-and-run incident last April.

Judge Carlos Valle stated that there were clear discrepancies between the accounts offered by the Madrid police officers and the Popular Party (PP) official.

The incident began when officers tried to give Aguirre a ticket for double-parking in a bus lane on the Gran Vía in Madrid.

After initially handing over her papers to the officers, Aguirre reportedly said she felt she was being held longer than necessary and proceeded to hurriedly drive away, knocking down a parked police scooter in the process.

Officers followed her to her residence in the Malasaña district of the city where a confrontation occurred. Although the entire incident was caught on surveillance cameras, the case has been dropped.

Aguirre is expected to be the PP candidate in the Madrid mayoral race this year.
