A spectacular fire on Peñoncillo beach has destroyed a boat which was, for many years, a restaurant and a venue offering ‘live’ entertainment.
Firefighters took three hours to extinguish the blaze, which has left just ashes and a pile of twisted metal where once ‘El Barco’ stood.
The boat ceased functioning as a restaurant a few years ago now and had recently been used by a group of homeless people. It is thought that the fire was probably caused by the carelessness or negligence of one of this group.

Newman, who died of cancer last month aged 83, recorded the voiceover for The Meerkats at a studio near his home in Connecticut in late 2007. It is a BBC co-production and follows a family of meerkats fighting to survive. It is due out in UK cinemas next year.
It was previously thought that the US actor’s last screen credit was in the Pixar animation Cars, in which he voiced the role of Doc Hudson. Newman officially retired from acting in May 2007 after a career spanning more than five decades.

It had to happen, of course….rain for feria. Wouldn’t have been complete without it. Quite a downpour, but at least it didn’t last that long. Just long enough to soak me!!
The big surprise was the sudden and drastic drop in temperature, it was actually COLD for a while there…
Traffic wardens, who are reluctant to reveal their identities for obvious reasons, have been blowing the whistle on ‘ticketing targets’ set by local councils.
The wardens say they face disciplinary action or even the sack if they don’t hand out enough tickets during a shift. At one council, the target is apparently 15 tickets in a seven hour shift. Not only that, they are required to increase the number of tickets they hand out to cover any overtime they might work. more »
Binmen refused to empty rubbish bins because the wheels were standing on gravel at the edge of his driveway citing that to pull them over gravel, even a couple of inches, contravenes health and safety regulations.
Mark Birkett thought it was a joke, but West Wlitshire Council informed him that his bins would not be emptied unless they were fully on the pavement outside his home. Mr Birkett pointed out that the pavement was narrow and on a slope, making it dangerous to leave a bin out there and bins tended to fall over and spill all their contents all over the place.
Even one of the Councillors apparently described the situation as ‘lunacy’ and ‘health and safety gone mad’. He’ll be looking for a new job soon, then!
Residents in an area of Dagenham, Essex, were getting a little fed up with not being able to sit in their own back gardens, risking assault or having graffiti daubed on buildings by a group of up to twenty-five yobs.
Calls to the police yielded nothing but a ‘we’ll send someone round’, but they never did. Complaints to the council fared little better. The area is covered by CCTV cameras, but the youths would use two trees as shelter to obscure them from view. It is here that they would congregate, out of sight, to drink, take drugs, have sex and hide, knowing the CCTV cameras were unable to identify them. more »
