Whale washed up on Mezquitilla beach

The partly decomposed body of a beaked whale measuring 5 metres in length was washed up onto Mezquitilla beach in Algorrobo on Thursday and after being studied, was finally removed on Friday.

Phoenician sites included in Historical Heritage Catalogue

Three Phoenician sites located at the mouth of the Rio Algorrobo in the towns of Algorrobo and Vélez-Málaga have now been included in the Catalogue of Andalucian Historical Heritage, these enclaves dating back to the 8th and 9th centuries BC.

Artificial reef for Algorrobo and Vélez-Málaga

Work is underway off the coasts of Algorrobo and Vélez-Málaga to install an artificial reef. The project, funded by the European Fisheries Fund (75%) and the Junta de Andalucía (25%), is designed to both put an end to illegal trawling in the area and to preserve valuable fisheries.

Artificial reef for Algorrobo

The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries of the Junta de Andalucía is to begin the construction of an artificial reef in Algorrobo later this month. The €304,346 project, funded by the European Fisheries Fund, is designed not only to prevent erosion of the coastline but also to preserve fish stocks and prevent unauthorised trawling.

Pot plants confiscated in Algorrobo

Local Police officers in Algorrobo have confiscated 35 marijuana plants being cultivated in an almost inaccessible part of the village. The plants were well camouflaged and spread out between bushes and trees in an area on the edge of the village near the river.
