Skier injured in avalanche

One man was injured and is now in hospital after being buried by an avalanche in the Tajos de la Virgen area of the Sierra Nevadas.

Fifty km of pistes open at the Sierra Nevada Ski Resort

The Sierra Nevada Ski Resort in Granada has 50 kilometres of pistes available for skiing this weekend with spring snow on all tracks.and with  Laguna, Loma de Dílar, Borreguiles, Veleta and Río all open.

First snows in the Sierra Nevadas

The first snows have fallen in the Sierra Nevadas between Borreguiles and the highest peak, El Veleta, with around 4 centimetres of white stuff covering the area. This early snowfall is important as it will help to moisten and cool the ground before the next snowfall.

Still no trace of missing British hiker

A third day of searching for the British hiker missing in the Sierra Nevadas following an avalanche in the area has ended without any trace being found of the man. Snow caterpillars have been smoothing the area to facilitate the use of tracker dogs.

End of the ski season

Today, Sunday, is the final day of the season at the Sierra Nevada ski resort with over 30 kilometres of slopes in use. The end of the season, which has lasted 149 days, is being marked by a huge Day of the Cross celebration with crosses made from skis, entertainment and a huge paella in Plaza de Andalucia. The Department of Youth in Colmenar, in association with the youth organisation Lantejas, is organising a skiing course in the Sierra Nevada ski resort aimed particularly at young people.
