Community service orders not being carried out

The Public Prosecutor for Road safety in Andalucia, Luis Carlos Rodríguez León, has criticised the legal provision to substitute road traffic convictions for community service orders as many of these are not being carried out through lack of resources.

Of 4,000 people sentenced to community service in 2009, over 1,000 had their sentence waived through lack of local resources. This, says Luis Carlos Rodríguez León, needs urgent attention as these people end up going unpunished.

This includes people convicted of drink driving offences. The offenders may well lose their license for a period of time, but they escape further punishment.
