An 80 year old man died on Saturday afternoon in a fire at his home in calle Doctor Ugarte in the Bilbao district of Txurdinaga. The cause of the fire appears to have been a cigarette.
At around 17:00 on Saturday afternoon, a relative went to visit the victim and noticed smoke coming from the third floor apartment.
Firemen found the elderly man dead in bed, his body charred. It is thought that a lit cigarette caused the mattress to burn and that the subsequent smoke was the cause of death.
