Divers clean up around Maro

Twenty professional divers from the Association of Underwater Activities at the University of Malaga (AUAS) spent the afternoon cleaning rubbish from an 80,000 square metre area of seabed between the watchtower and Molino de Papel beach in Maro.

The divers remained submerged for an hour and removed thirty kilos of rubbish, mainly bags, plastic bottles, shoes, cardboard and old irrigation pipes. They also warned of the continual damage being done in the area and the progressive loss of biodiversity, something that has been publicised for many years now by various organisations.

The area has been protected since 1989 and there are calls for increased surveillance to curb poaching and illegal inshore trawling.
