John Peatey 1956 – 2014

We are sad to relate the sudden passing on Sunday of John Peatey at the age of just 58 years. John was well-known around Nerja for many years and was involved in numerous activities, including writing articles for Soltalk magazine and The Costa del Sol News. This from the Costa del Sol News:

John Peatey 1956 – 2014

John Peatey who died suddenly last Sunday had known his adopted home town of Nerja for many years after finding it accidentally when his car broke down during a holiday.

Originally from Buckinghamshire, he was an Eton College chorister, a talented organ player and spent many years rigging sound and lighting for pop concerts, corporate presentations and other big venue events. He was also a local Liberal Democrat councillor and, in the late 1980s, represented England in the European Federation of Sea Anglers Championships.

Since moving permanently to Spain 12 years ago, John became involved in a range of activities including writing feature articles for Costa del Sol News and Soltalk magazine. He was also a trained chef, enthusiastic photographer and a big fan of Status Quo.

John was also a serious “petrolhead” and was an active member of the Classic Car Club of Andalucía. The day before he died, he was on a rally with club members and reported having had a thoroughly good time.

His mother Kathleen, sister Diana, brother-in-law and two nieces all live nearby, and he also leaves his partner of 13 years, Dave, and their dog Rosie.

John’s funeral will be held at the new Vélez-Málaga crematorium in calle Cementerio (not the one by Lidl) on Friday, July 11, at 11.00am, followed by a chance to celebrate John’s life at Potter’s Bar in Nerja (near the Hotel Villa Flamenca). All are welcome to attend both events.

As John was well-known for his selection of colourful Hawaiian shirts, the wearing of black is strictly forbidden! No flowers please, but a donation to John’s favourite charity, Help for Heroes, would be appreciated.

Our deepest sympathies go to all John’s family and friends.
