Cereal harvest in Málaga province down by 35%

Cereal production in Málaga province is expected to be about 35% down on last year, despite a doubling of the area under cultivation.

The harvest is expected to be about 70,000 tons, down from 112,276 in 2013, this being due to a hot and dry May. The quality of the cereals is also much lower.

Production in the Guadalhorce district (around Ardales), the crop has been virtually nil. In the Northwest (Campillos, Teba, Almargen) the harvest is down by 30% and in the Northern sector it is down by 40%.

Ronda looks like being a normal harvest, although not top quality, and some areas did manage above average harvests, but the overall picture is a 35% reduction.

The quality of the cereals is on the low side due to the low weight of the grain, but are nevertheless high in protein for feed purposes.
