Projects discussed in Madrid

The Mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, has been in Madrid to meet with the Deputy Director General of the Department of Coasts to discuss a number of projects relating to Nerja.

The El Playazo promenade project is reportedly being published for consultation and once the project has been definitively approved, the Department of Coasts will begin a phased implementation of the scheme. The first 70 metres will be beach, tripling the current surface area to some 70,000 square metres.

The next 30 metres will be the new promenade and a further 100 metres will be for sports and leisure facilities, bars and chiringuitos and three parking areas. This is separate from the Council’s plans for a huge redevelopment of the El Playazo area which will include hotels and thousands of houses.

Another issue discussed was Torrecilla beach, where the Department of Coasts is apparently working on ways of adapting the promenade to a jetty to built as a breakwater to prevent the regular beach erosion.

Also on the agenda was the old Paseo de los Carabineros, the Council having drafted a project for a new walkway of 200 metres from the Balcón de Europa. This draft report is currently awaiting a report by the Department of Infrastructure and once this is completed, the matter will be passed to the Department of Coasts for consideration.

Also discussed was the possible extension of Calahonda beach with the construction of a merendero outside the maritime terrestrial public domain, namely on private land. This would involve negotiating an agreement with the landowner.

The mayor also apparently addressed the possibility of constructing a pedestrian footpath connecting Calahonda beach and El Salon beach.

Many of the items have been ‘discussed’ for a number of years now and just how many, if any, will actually come to fruition in the foreseeable future is anyone’s guess.
