Parking in Nerja has become more difficult during the past few years as most of the ‘free’ areas – plots of unused land in and around town where the owners permitted parking – have disappeared due to ‘licensing issues’.

On-street parking

On-street parking is permitted, and is still free, although it can be a bit problematic during the summer monthes and may involve numerous circuits before you find a spot. Unless you are extremely lucky, of course.

There are a number of smaller streets where the parking rules change periodically – alternate months/part months/periods – so always check to make sure you are parked on the correct side of the road and note when any change occurs.

Paid parking

The Municipal Underground Car Park is located in the centre of the town, very close to the Balcón de Europa, and the entrance is via calle La Cruz and the exit is via calle Animas or calle Granada.

The car park is signposted from various parts of the town.

The Parking Balcon de Europa – Carabeo car park, with a capacity of +/- 1,000 vehicles, is located in Los Huertos de Carabeo, fairly central, and in October is used for the annual feria.

There are special reduced rates for residents living in the immediate vicinity as well as a number of special offers.

Supermarket parking

The Supersol (junction of avenida Castilla Perez and calle San Miguel near the entrance to Nerja from Torrox) and Mercadona (just past Plaza de la Ermita on calle San Miguel, opposite the Guardia Civil station) supermarkets both have underground car parks with varying tariffs and first hour usually free.

The Supersol (on the N-340 heading for Maro, opposite the Nerja Club Hotel) and Iranzo (corner of avenida de Pescia and calle Rodrigues Acosta) supermarkets have free parking areas.

Lidl (Ma-5105 Frigiliana road) has a large free car parking area.

Free parking

There is a free parking area in the Parque Verano Azul, calle Antonio Ferrandis ‘Chanquete’, although a ‘voluntary contribution’ is requested.

The proposed site for the stalled Health Centre project is currently a large, free parking area. It can be accessed from the N-340/avenida Pescia near the bus station and via Rambla Chillar (behind Mercadona) or from calle Puente Viejo.

There is plenty of free parking along El Playazo beach. There are two car parks, one at each end of the beach. Access to the car park at the western end (near the Marinas de Nerja Hotel) is either via the beach track or from the N-340 coast road – if you are heading out of Nerja on the N-340 you will have to continue a short distance to the Punta Lara roundabout and then head back as it is not permitted to make a left turn on this stretch of road.

Access to the car park at the eastern end of the beach is via the beach track. Parking is no longer permitted on the beach track itself which means that use of the car parks is compulsory. It is, however, quite a hike into the centre of town from here.

There is now a free, enclosed parking area on calle Almirante Carranza, not far from the junction with calle Antonio Ferrandis ‘Chanquete’.

Work has started on an underground car park at Burriana beach – a nightmare for parking in the summer months – but this won’t be finished until the end of 2014…at the earliest.
