International trains (from France) arrive in either Madrid or Barcelona and from there you can catch a train to various destinations in Andalucia.

There are basically four different services available:

High Speed (Alta Velocidad)

AVE, which run on a special line at speeds of up to 350 kph.

Talgo 200
Madrid to Malaga (4.5 hours)
Madrid to Huelva (4.6 hours) and Cadiz (5 hours) Madrid to Algeciras (6 hours)

Long Distance (Grandes Lineas)
From Madrid and Barcelona there are direct services to: Huelva, Sevilla, Cadiz, Jerez, Algeciras, Málaga, Cordoba, Granada, Almeria, Linares / Baeza. There is also a service from Cadiz to Almeria via Jerez, Sevilla Cordoba and Linares / Baeza.

Regional (Regionales)

There is a network of regional trains that stop at the smaller intermediate stations en route. These are:

Sevilla to Cordoba to Jaen
Sevilla to Bobadilla to Malaga
Algeciras to Ronda to Bobadilla to Malaga
Seville to Bobadilla to Granada
Malaga to Bobadilla to Cordoba
Granada to Almeria
Granada to Linares / Baeza

Local Trains (Cercanias)

These trains operate on the following routes:
Málaga to Fuengirola (Calling at Málaga airport) San Andrés-Guadalhorce-Cargo Terminal-Málaga Airport-San Julién-Plaza Mayor-Los Alamos-La Colina-Torremolinos-Montemar Alto-El Pinillo-Benelmádena/Arroyo de la Miel-Torremuelle-Carvajal-Torreblanca-Los Boliches-Fuengirola.

Ticket prices are dependent on the number of zones travelled. A return ticket, valid all day, from Málaga to Fuengirola will only cost around €4.

Booking is advisable on the ‘Alta Velocidad’ and ‘Grandes lineas’, especially if travelling at weekends and on bank holidays. Bookings can be made at the main stations and through RENFE agents, which includes many travel agents.

Ticket prices vary according to class of service (Club, Preferente, Turista) and the time of travel (Punta, Plano, Valle).
