Radioactive contamination in Ascó, Tarragona

The nuclear power plant in Ascó, Tarragona, has detected radioactive particles both inside and outside the facility.

The levels have been described as ‘limited’ or, in the worst case scenario, ‘well below legally established limits’. The particles are thought to have come from the extraction and air filtration systems and are the result of problems which occurred during the refueling of Unit 1 in November last year.

Greenpeace have reported that ‘significant levels of radioactivity’ have been detected on roofs and exterior fencing. Environmentalists say that this incident shows a resounding failure of the monitoring services PVRA (Plan de Vigilancia Radiactiva de Ascó and REVIRA (Red de Vigilancia Radiactiva Ambiental).
