Up with skirts, down with trousers

An industrial dispute involving nurses and skirts is continuing in Cádiz with six people facing the sack.

The owners of the Clinica San Rafel in Cádiz insist that nurses should wear skirts while on duty rather then trousers and this has resulted in a quite bitter industrial dispute.

Earlier in the year, in March, the company deducted bonus payments from the wages of nurses who flouted the ‘skirt regulation’. Now, six persistent offenders face the sack if they do not conform to company policy.

The company itself faces a possible €6,000 fine for sexual discrimination from the Labour Inspectorate although this has yet to be confirmed. The Ministry of Employment is studying the case before making any final judgement on the question of fines.

A seventh nurse, who also refused to wear a skirt, was transferred, against her wishes, to another facility in Málaga and this action has also become part of the dispute.
