More taxis for Nerja

Nerja Council has approved an amendment to the municipal ordinances relating to private taxis which will mean extra licenses will be granted.

The Council, using its rather useful absolute majority, has approved an amendment to the municipal ordinances relating to the number of private taxis permitted on the streets of the town. The amendment involves revising the coefficient used to calculate the number of licenses granted.

The licenses are granted on the basis of registered population, and the coefficient has not been revised since 1990. There are currently 29 taxis in Nerja, but the new calculation will automatically raise the permitted number to 30.8.

Presumably this will be rounded up to two extra vehicles rather than taking two seats out of one of the vehicles! Although you never know.

The new calculation has been based on the resident population as of April 30th 2008, a figure of 22,014. It will, however, be a few weeks until the new licenses are granted as the amendment to the ordinances has to be posted in the Boletín Oficial de la Provincia (BOP) – Official Provincial Gazette.

The taxi drivers, after a generally weak winter, are doing well at the moment due to the provincial bus strike.
