First in Spain

King PenguinsSelwo Marina in Benalmádena has witnessed the first King Penguin, Aptenodytes patagonicus, to be born in captivity in Spain.

The little fella weighed in at 3.2 kilos. The King Penguin is the second largest species after the Emperor Penguin and can grow to a height of almost one metre.

The birth coincides with the celebration of the International Polar Year, which began in March 2007 and continues until March 2009. I obviously need to get out more, we appear to have adopted a new calendar system.
