Street names to change in Barbate

It is now ten years since the town of Barbate changed its name, or at least dropped part of the name. It was formerly Barbate de Franco. Now, 35 streets in the town are due to have their names changes.

In accordance with the Law of Historic Memory, thirty-five streets are due for a name change and the emblems relating to the Franco regime will be removed from the Town Hall building. This action will complete the severing of links to the dictator Francisco Franco.

Amongst the main changes, Avenida de Generalisimo will become Avenida del Mar and Avenida de José Antonio will become Avenida del Rio Barbate. Other changes will see the disappearance of street names such as Ebro, Toledo and Teruel which, despite being place names, are too closely linked to the former dictator.
