Artificial reef for Algorrobo

The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries of the Junta de Andalucía is to begin the construction of an artificial reef in Algorrobo later this month.

The €304,346 project, funded by the European Fisheries Fund, is designed not only to prevent erosion of the coastline but also to preserve fish stocks and prevent unauthorised trawling.

There are to be various types of reinforced concrete modules to be used, some to eliminate the drag which causes erosion of the seashore, others anchored at strategic points to present an insurmountable barrier to prevent illegal trawling in the area. The modules are currently under construction in Motril.

The modules are designed to be long-lasting, durable and with a low pollution risk factor.
