Man dies in hospital fire

A man died this morning in a fire at the Psychiatric Unit of the Virgen del Rocío hospital in Sevilla.

The victim had been admitted to the hospital around midnight last night. An aggressive man, it took four security guards and two doctors to subdue him. He was eventually settled in room 237 where, it appears, he set fire to the mattress.

The fire began at 06:25 this morning. Thick smoke prevented the security staff from evacuating patients and they had to wait for the arrival of the Fire Brigade. The Emergency Services were quickly on the scene – 37 firefighters, 10 fire engines, 22 police officers and 11 patrol cars – and the fire was extinguished bu 06:50.

A total of 29 patients had to be evacuated to another hospital and will be able to return within the next forty-eight hours.
