Caleta de Vélez port expansion

Vélez-Málaga Council is trying to help seven families whose homes will be affected by the planned expansion of Caleta de Vélez port.

The families in question have agreed to leave their homes as long as the Council finds suitable alternative land and provides the funds needed for relocation.

The Council intends to ask the Junta de Andalucía to provide the necessary municipal land and that the EPPA (Empresa Pública de Puertos de Andalucía), who are responsible for the port expansion works, provide the funding for the new homes. The Council believes the EPPA has a responsibility to ensure that new dwellings are built before the current ones are demolished.

A slightly more difficult issue yet to be resolved relates to 15 dwellings in calle Real which are now situated on maritime-terrestrial land and will be affected by the proposed building of a new promenade. Negotiations are underway with the Department of Coasts to try and find an acceptable solution but, in the meanmtime, the residents have taken the matter to the courts in order to try and safeguard their interests.
