More Spanish troops for Afghanistan

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Miguel Angel Moratinos, has announced that Spain is sending more troops to Afghanistan.

The Minister did not specify exact number of troops involved but indicated that the number is ‘small’. More specific details will be announced by the Minister of Defence, Carme Chacón, during her visit to Baden Baden to celebrate the 60th anniversary of NATO.

The new troops will be used to train local Afghan soldiers.

In addition, Miguel Angel Moratinos announced the proposed withdrawal of 9 Guardia Civil officers from Kosovo. The Guardia Civil officers, part of EULEX, were deployed in Kosovo in January and February this year. As agreed with NATO, the withdrawal will not be immediate but will be a gradual process.
