Robbers detained

National Police officers have detained two men in connection with a robbery and fatal shooting which occurred at the Las Tres Culturas bar in Córdoba on March 22nd 2009.

The two detainees, both only 21 years of age, have a long record of crime with, between them, 35 arrests for robbery with violence. Both have several court cases pending.

On March 22nd 2009, two people burst into the Las Tres Culturas bar in calle Ciudad de Mengíbar. Their faces were covered and they were armed with a pistol and a machete. Announcing that it was a robbery, one of the men fired a shot into the air.

Customers in the bar thought the gun contained blanks and rushed at the robbers to prevent them taking any money. However, they were not blanks and in the ensuing struggle, one man was shot in the chest and later died from his wounds.

The robbers fled, empty handed, on motorbikes.

One of the robbers was arrested after a robbery at a home in the Polígono Guadalquivir, the other was detained in the city centre.  Police are investigating if the two men are also connected to a recent spate of armed robberies in Córdoba.

The two men have been charged with robbery with intimidation and murder and are currently being held in prison.
