Ban on mollusc fishing lifted for most of Málaga province

The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries of the Junta de Andalucía has lifted the ban on fishing for molluscs in most parts of Málaga province, the exceptions being Málaga port and Punta de Calaburras.

The ban came into effect on April 1st. Some fishermen have been able to adapt and fish for alternatives, such as octopus, but others have not and, as the ban was in force for more than 21 days, owners are eligible for compensation.

The total compensation bill is expected to be in the region of €230,000. Owners are being compensated €100 for each of the (19) fishing days which have passed and crewmembers will receive €36 per day for each of the calendar days that have elapsed since the ban came into force.
