The previous record was held by Castleblayney in County Monaghan, Ireland, with a total of 1,253, but this has now been more than doubled by the city of Swansea with a staggering 2,510.
The world record attempt took place at the Oceana nightclub in Swansea and involved mainly students. Verification of the attempt took several hours and wasn’t made official until about 01:00 in the morning.
It was, of course, the world record for the number of people in one place dressed as Smurfs. The delay in announcing the record as ‘official’ was due to the necessity to check each and every participant to make sure that no natural skin was visible.
The group now plans to go on to make further world record attempts such as for the largest number dressed as Daleks and various Superheroes.
