Guardia Civil officer dies from injuries sustained in accident last month

A 27 year old Guardia Civil officer injured by a drunk driver on September 20th 2009 has died at the Carlos Haya hospital in Málaga.

The accident occurred at 06:00 at kilometer 64 of the A-357 between Campillos and Málaga. The officer, initials J.D.O., was directing traffic at the scene of an overturned lorry, an accident also involving excess alcohol, when he was struck down by J.M.P.S.

The officer, in a coma, was taken to the Intensive Care Unit at Carlos Haya hospital.

The offending driver was tested for alcohol and found to be over the legal limit. He made an appearance in court and was released after being charged with a crime against road safety.
