Judge orders immobilisation of Liberian registered ship

A judge in Algeciras has ordered the immobilisation of the Liberian registered container ship responsible for an oil spill near San Roque last week.

The Public Prosecutor has filed a criminal and civil complaint against the owners of the vessel for environmental crimes and to cover the cost of cleaning up the spill. An amount of €1.5 million is being claimed from the owners of the vessel.

The beach at El Riconcillo was badly hit and 741 tons of gunk, a mixture of sand, water and fuel oil, has already been removed. Fishermen in the area have also been affected by the spill, caused when the container ship hit the wall when entering dry dock, and have added their complaints to the list.
