The Guardia Civil officer killed in a shootout with armed robbers on Tuesday in A Cañiza, Pontevedra, has been named as 38 year old Miguel Jorge Piñeiro Lorenzo.
At 06:40, the police received an alert from the security company for the Caixa Galicia in A Cañiza and a patrol was sent to investigate.
The police patrol surprised the robbers, who were trying to make a hole through to the bank from an adjacent building, and a shootout ensued.
Miguel Jorge Piñeiro Lorenzo was killed during the exchange of gunfire and his partner, 32 year old Alfonso José Riveiro Cabaleiro, was injured and is now in hospital recovering.
One of the robbers was wounded and subsequently arrested, the other fled on foot and is now being hunted by the police.
