Search for Estepona gunmen after failed robbery attempt

Police are still searching for three men involved an attempted robbery of an armoured van at a shopping mall in Estepona in which one person was shot and wounded during an exchange of gunfire between security guards and the robbers.

The attack was carried out in broad daylight at the shopping mall in Avenida del Litoral, near to the promenade, the robbers apparently unconcerned by the number of people around at the time.

Two men attacked the security guards who were carrying money for two ATM’s in the mall. The guards attempted to repel the attack and a shootout began. A female Red Cross volunteer, collecting school supplies, received a gunshot wound to the leg.

The police arrived on the scene and the robbers fled, empty-handed, one running off towards the beach and the other escaping on a motorcycle driven by a third person. The robbers also left behind one of their weapons at the scene.

The search is on for the three men but, so far, no arrests have been made.
