Whale washed up on Mezquitilla beach

The partly decomposed body of a beaked whale measuring 5 metres in length was washed up onto Mezquitilla beach in Algorrobo on Thursday and after being studied, was finally removed on Friday.

Beaked whales, a protected species in danger of extinction, usually live in deep waters, often diving to depths of 1,900 metres.

This one was an adult male and showed signs of abdominal injuries which are thought to have been the cause of death.
