DGT to monitor school buses in latest campaign

Starting today, Monday, and continuing until Friday, the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) will be turning its attention to school buses.

The DGT will be monitoring the age of vehicles being used, the use of seatbelts by passengers (compulsory for vehicles registered after October 2007), the presence of a suitably qualified supervisor on such transport and the displaying of a sign indicating the vehicle is being used for school transport.

There have been 36 accidents involving school buses since January 2011 and although this mode of transport has the lowest ‘risk’, it remains the leading cause of death and serious injury to children up to the age of 14 years.
