Negotiations continue for acquisition of he old Teatro Lope de Vega

Negotiations to acquire the old Lope de Vega theatre and cinema, the largest in the Axarquia with 1,143 seats, are in ‘full swing’ according to the mayor of Vélez-Málaga, Francisco Delgado Bonilla.

The mayor believes that the current Teatro del Carmen, with only 250 seats, is very limited when it comes to staging major events as it is difficult for organisations to cover their expenses.

The 2013 municipal budget contains an amount of €100,000 relating to the purchase of the theatre, although the mayor has reportedly refused to say how much the final cost will be.

The Teatro Lope de Vega, built in 1961, will need renovating and updating to meet all the new regulations. The purchase of the theatre was included in the PP election manifesto.
