The Tax Office has released a final report on the amount of money diverted from the coffers of El Ejido Council in Almeria, the former Mayor, Juan Enciso, being one of the main suspects in the case.
The fraud case, codenamed ‘Caso Poniente’, has involved the diverting of €60 million from the municipal coffers through the joint venture company Elsur and a network of subcontractors. Investigators have sifted through more than one and a half million documents to discover the network of fake invoices.
