Sevilla missed a golden opportunity to rise to the top of the pile by losing 1-0 at Athletic Bilbao, Aduriz finding the net in the 13th minute.
Sevilla have only won La Liga once, back in 1945-46. They did finish fifth last season and won the Europa League title. They are now fifth, but only two points off the leaders Real Madrid.
Valencia move up to second place after a 1-3 win at Villarreal. An own goal Trigueros in the 13th minute started the ball rolling and Mustafi bagged a pair in the second half to put the visitors well in control.
Villarreal scored a late consolation goal, Trigueros making amends for putting the ball into the back of his own net early on.
