In addition to ‘normal’ festive days, when you can expect most things to be closed, particularly banks and public offices, there are also what are known as ‘puente’ (bridge) days.

If a public holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, a ‘puente’ occurs to make it a nice long weekend break. Some shops will be open on ‘puente’ days.
